Storied Strings: The Guitar In American Art

For Antiques and The Arts Weekly

In life I was mute, in death I sing, a guitar would remark, recalling the amazing voyage of the late Tony Rice's Holy Grail Martin D-28. If guitars could tell their stories, oh, what sagas they might describe. The story is told by Art Dudley in the Fretboard Journal article from April 2016. "58957" off the C.F." The 1935 Martin assembly line guitar's place in American music history became the stuff of folklore.

ArtSEA: Two Seattle museums rethink art through arrangement

For Crosscut

I recently observed a lady and her teenage daughter bickering when I was at the Frye Art Museum. The mother wanted her daughter to be present and just experience the art, but the daughter insisted that she wasn't doing it for self-validation and that she just wanted people to see it. The argument was fairly standard, but it was so in keeping with the theme of the exhibit that for a brief moment I wondered if it had been staged.

When murals depict traumatic history, schools must decide what stays on the wall

For NPR

An argumentative debate has erupted over a mural at San Francisco's George Washington High School.

It depicts George Washington and the slaves he owned, as well as a life-size depiction of a dead Native American. The city's Board of Education first agreed to paint over the painting before deciding to do so. The organization revoked the order after a contentious election resulted in the recall of three board members. Town Destroyer, a new documentary that is available to stream through October 16, details everything.
