Whitney Museum of American Art

About the Whitney Museum of American Art

In the early 20th century, emerging American artists were struggling to find an audience for their work. Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney saw an opportunity to help, establishing a gallery and collecting hundreds of works of art herself. After collecting over 500 pieces, Whitney attempted to donate the collection to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Upon their refusal, Whitney forged her own path and established the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1930.

Now, the Whitney Museum of Modern Art has one of the most impressive collections of twentieth-century American art in the world and continues to focus on collecting and exhibiting living American artists.

They have an incredible collection of Benton artworks, including drawings, lithographs, and paintings. The Whitney Museum has included Benton in over 20 exhibitions, including an exhibition focused solely on his work of the 1930s: Benton and America in the 1930s: Works on Paper.
