The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)
About MoMA
The Museum of Modern Art (known as MoMA) was founded in 1929 by 3 of the most prominent art collectors of the time in order to create a space that went beyond the policies of traditional art museums of the time. The popularity of the museum was such that within just 10 years MoMA had to move three times into ever-large spaces, eventually landing in the building it occupies today.
The 708,000-square-foot museum holds 200,000 pieces of art, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photos, media, and performance art. Within the collection are nine works by Thomas Hart Benton, including Homestead (1934), Mine Strike from The American Scene, no. 2 (1936) and The American Scene, no. 2 (1936).
