About the Indianapolis Museum of Art
The Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA) is a 152-acre encyclopedic art museum located at Newfields. The museum is the ninth oldest and the eighth largest art museum of its kind in the United States. It was first established in November 1883 as the Art Association of Indianapolis where they opened an exhibition of 453 works by 137 artists. Its name was only later changed to the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 1969.
The permanent collection of the Indianapolis Museum of Art contains over 54,000 works, spanning 5,000 years of art history including African, American, Asian, and European pieces.
