About the Hunter Museum of American Art
The 1.4-acre Hunter Museum of American Art was built 1906 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, overlooking the Tennessee River and downtown Chattanooga. The museum was named after George Hunter, who inherited the Coca-Cola Bottling empire from his uncle Benjamin Thomas.
In 2005, the Hunter Museum portion of the 21st Century Waterfront Plan was completed. The museum now features a permanent collection of over 3,000 works which spans 100 years of architecture, and a temporary exhibition of American arts in the Southeast.
Included in its permanent collection is Thomas Hart Benton’s painting, The Wreck of the Ole ’97 (1943) and lithograph, The Wreck of the Ole ’97 (1944) .
