Hirshhorn Museum of Art

The Hirshhorn, part of the Smithsonian Institute, was established in 1966 by an act of Congress and it opened its doors to the public on Oct. 1, 1974. Since its inception, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden has worked to retain its original aim of showcasing contemporary art and artists by educating as many people as possible about the transformational potential of modern and contemporary art. The museum includes over 60,000 square feet of exhibition space within its high circular structure and 4 acres of outdoor space in its multilevel Sculpture Garden and Plaza.

The building contains more than 12,000 artworks, including 5 art works by Thomas Hart Benton, such as Chilmark Landscape (1922), Field Workers (Cotton Pickers) (1945), The Cliffs (1921), People of Chilmark (Figure Composition) (1920) and The Artist in his Studio (1921).
